General Description of the HS Program
The goals and objectives for students who engage in the health science program of studies are several-fold. Any student who is interested in pursuing a career in the medical field is highly encouraged to participate. The program offers benefits for all students regardless of academic path.
Students gain a solid preliminary foundation in health science theory and application. This base of knowledge serves as an excellent tactical and strategic starting point in post-secondary baccalaureate studies such as pre-medicine, pre-veterinary, pre-nursing, pre-pharmacy, and pre-physical therapy just to name a few.
Upon completion of the program, students will have gained medical knowledge and skills that render them qualified for entry-level positions within the health care arena. The EMS and Nursing Ed/Clinical Internship courses provide opportunites for students to sit for the First Responder and Nursing Assistant industry certification examinations, respectively.
Furthermore, the health science program serves to assist students in their decision-making process of choosing a post-secondary path of study and ultimately a career in health care or NOT in health care. The courses are designed to provide a sampling of various careers in health care and the proficiencies necessary to pursue and succeed within these professions.

My name is Missy Bowers, and my philosophy of teaching is to instruct, mentor, and coach students in a way that fosters their academic, social, personal, and professional growth. My goal is to cultivate critical thinkers who become life-long learners, compassionate caregivers, and productive, accountable community members.

Anita Crook
Hello, My name is Anita Crook. I am excited about teaching in the Health Science Program at Maryville High School. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself, both professionally and personally. I have been a pediatric nurse for 15+ years. During this time, I have been able to apply my nursing skills in several areas and settings, including neonatal intensive care units, pediatric medical-surgical units, outpatient clinics and surgery centers, hospital and collegiate educational settings, and now the public high school setting. This illustrates the diverse opportunities available not just to nurses, but to all health care occupations.
My husband and I live here in Maryville. I have three daughters. I enjoy all sports, but especially volleyball. I also enjoy reading, hiking, camping, sudoku, chocolate, and an occasional good nap. I am passionate about my family, my church, and living life to the fullest.
My philosophy of teaching has been shaped by the many years of education and experiences both in nursing and as an educator. As I reflect on my beliefs regarding teaching and learning, I am anchored by 4 core truths:
Students learn more when they are actively engaged in the content; the teacher’s enthusiasm in the classroom significantly impacts learning; education is an integral part of students reaching their full potential; and that what happens in the classroom can have a significant, lifelong impact in the lives of students, both academically and personally.
In healthcare and in the health science courses, knowledge alone is insufficient; knowledge must be combined with hands-on skills, and the ability to relate to diverse patient populations. A variety of learning activities are designed to engage students in learning basic medical knowledge and then applying that knowledge in skills lab, scenarios, and/or case studies. I am thankful for the opportunity to combine my passions for teaching, nursing, and young adults/teenagers in a classroom setting.
